Report from a DR Ministry

On Saturday, October 21, 2006, the NYI of the Tropical Church of the Nazarene in the Dominican Republic made an impact on the community around where their church has an on-going ministry. This ministry is the “Café of Herrera” where the NCM Project “Footprints” is located.

Around 20 young people with the desire to evangelize went to “Café of Herrera” to evangelize from four in the afternoon to six in the evening. They handed out tracts and invitations to an event that would take place in front of the location of project “Footprints”. Around 6:00 pm the people began to arrive with their chairs to sit in front of the space we had designated as the stage. Around ninety people, including adults and children gathered that day. And surpassing all inconveniences, once again God moved through dramas, choreographies, a Christian film and the Word from the pastor. The community was pleased.

We thank God for blessing this activity.

A Letter Of Thanks

Dear Nazarene family:

The Jamaica West District, the family of the late Pastor Errol Haughton, and the Petersfield and Mt Carmel churches in particular, wish to thank you for your letters of condolences, words of encouragement and prayerful support during the past two weeks.

The Thanksgiving service was held on Monday, October 16 and drew hundreds of mourners from all walks of life. The service was more like a “holiness convention.” It was fittingly held on one of our public holidays, “National Heroes Day.” For our church family, Pastor Haughton has gone down on record as one of our Spiritual heroes.

We do crave your continued prayers for his family and our district as we seek to fill the vacancies in our Pastorates in the days ahead.

Lionel Brown
District Superintendent, Jamaica West

Mrs. Patricia Holder, wife of Pastor Holder of Gray's Farm Church of the Nazarene in Antigua has been re-diagnosed with cancer.

Dr. John Smee, Caribbean Regional Director, said this of Mrs. Holder and family, "She is a delightful lady. Pastor Holder is one of the top people in the Caribbean or from anywhere. This family helped bring to life this church. Now it is a growing congregation. We must pray for this wonderful family and especially for Mrs. Holder."

Pastor William Holder writes this, "Please join me in prayer for Patricia my wife. . . the Doctor is recommending radiation and Chemo. She will be required to be in Trinidad for three months and the cost for [hospital] accommodation and food is $11,000. US. [Medical] treatment is not included [in this]. Caribbean Region hosts NCM Conference for Latin America, Focus on Children.

August 20-25, 2006, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America (MAC), and South America (SAM) Regions came together in the Dominican Republic for the Latin-American Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Conference. The focus of conference was children and ministries to them. The event was held at the Camatillo de Yamas campground in the northeast part of the country. The last two days of the meeting convened at the Hotel Talanquera east of Santo Domingo.

God was present in an amazing way at this conference, where regional NCM coordinators of Child Development participated. Coordinators from other programs specializing in children were also present. Everyone sang in unison, prayed and interceded for the children of their country and children worldwide.

Each region had the opportunity to present various projects designed for their specific countries. Programs presented from the Caribbean Region include: Nueva Luz (DR – New Light), Carita de Angel (PR - Face of an Angel), Huellas (DR - Footprints), Hijos de Pastores (CB & DR – Pastor’s Kids), and others.

Special guests added their support and input to the conference including Rev. Larry Bollinger – Global Coordinator of NCM, Esteven Gualberto – General Coordinator for the Child Sponsorship Program, Trino Jara – Child Sponsorship Coordinator Africa, Linda Bormer, Global President of MED, and Enrique Pinedo, a representative of Compassion International.

Many conferences like this one have been a great support and guide to reinforce the work of each participant wishing to broaden their global understanding of children’s issues. It also has been helpful to share ideas that each one can implement in their own ministry back in their home country.

The regional coordinators of Child Development were also introduced to a new online system that will facilitate the streamlined introduction of new children to the program. This online system will allow children to be “adopted” and supported more quickly after being introduced into the system. Mrs. Nell Becker Swedeen was one of the key initiators of this plan.

The entire conference was a team effort headed by Mrs. Paquita Bido, Coordinator of NCM in the D.R., Dr. Luis Carlos Saenz, MAC Regional Director, Dr. Luis Mesa, Dr. Helmer Juárez. A special thanks to these people for their planning and work. Thanks also to Dr. John Smee, Caribbean Regional Director, for hosting this great event on the Caribbean Region, and to Rev. Bryan Heil, Field Strategy Coordinator for the Spanish Caribbean. To God be the glory for a successful event that will impact this world.

Cyr at Home in the Caribbean

Caribbean Regional Director Dr. John Smee has announced the addition of Rev. Monte Cyr to the Caribbean Regional Ministry Team. Cyr will serve as the Youth Ministries Coordinator for the region, taking over from Rev. Curt Luthye, who has been serving in an interim capacity. Cyr’s responsibilities will include development of youth leaders, youth ministry training, resource development, and working with national leadership to help create regional strategies.

Cyr and his family come to the Caribbean from the Africa Region, where he served for seven and a half years as the Africa Youth Ministry Coordinator. Cyr is joined by his wife, Bethany, and their four children, Robbie (14), Amy (12), Bryan (10), and Nkele (5).

Cyr graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in religion, with an emphasis in religious education; and then from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1990 with a Master of Divinity, with an emphasis in youth ministry. He served as youth pastor at Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene from 1990 to 1994, and at Boise, Idaho, First Church of the Nazarene from 1994 to1998, before going to Africa in January 1999.

In addition to his responsibilities in the Caribbean Region, Cyr also serves as the Global NYI president, having been elected at the 2005 Global NYI Convention.

Smee has said of Cyr’s coming, “I predict he will not only challenge all of us to greater youth ministries throughout the region, but he will work along with each of us in accomplishing much for the youth — our church of ‘today’ as well as our church of ‘tomorrow.’”

“I am excited to join the Caribbean ministry team,” Cyr said, “and am confident that God will work in and through the youth and youth leaders of the region in transformational ways.”

Please pray for Cyr and his family as they enter into partnership with the leaders of the Caribbean and continue the work of building up the church of tomorrow.

Cyr may be contacted at Cyr@caribnaz.org

Trindad Church To Do W&W In Guyana

Taking to heart Christ’s Great Commission, the San Fernando Church in Trinidad, West Indies, will embark on its first ever mission trip July 21-29.  A group led by pastor Aziz Abidh will travel to the Demerrara District in Guyana to work on construction and improvement projects at three different churches.  The anticipated highlights of the visit are the revival services for which the San Fernando congregation has already been praying.  Their hope is that the Lord moves in a powerful way through these services.

Nazarene Missionaries Leave Haiti

The tense situation in Haiti has evolved to the point that mission leaders have requested ex-patriot missionaries living in Haiti return to their home country. With upcoming elections that typically elevate friction and the occurrence of other pronounced trends, the decision was made to evacuate.

Please pray for our home coming missionaries as they face this difficult transition. Pray that God will continue to bring forth fruit from their ministries. Pray for the safety of Haitian Nazarenes as they live through the complexities of daily life.

All ex-patriot missionaries are in their home country, safe and praying for their brothers and sisters in Haiti. Pray with us.

Dr. Paul Orjala died on Friday, December 2, in Olathe, Kansas. He was 80 years of age.

Paul and Mary Orjala are "pioneer missionary giants" in the Church of the Nazarene. From 1950-1964, Paul and Mary Orjala pioneered the work of the Church of the Nazarene in Haiti. Today, over 70% of the Nazarene church membership of the Caribbean Region is in the country of Haiti. There are more Nazarenes living in the country of Haiti than Nazarenes living in any other country of the world with the exception of the United States.

In 1964, Dr. Paul Orjala, started the school of Missions at the Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City where he was a professor from 1964-1986. He then served as mission field director in France from 1986-1989; and a religion professor at Point Loma Nazarene University from 1989-1995.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Orjala, daughters Dr. J. Jeanne Orjala Serrao, Lorie Beckum, and son, Dr. Jon E. Orjala; and six grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 10 at Nazarene Theological Seminary Chapel in Kansas City.

Letters of condolence can be sent to Mrs. Mary Orjala at 14724 South Village Drive, Olathe, KS 66062-2502

Dr. Orjala was a dear friend of the Caribbean and his life and ministry influenced much of how the current region looks today. We are saddened with this news, but rejoicing in the life of Paul Orjala, his ministry that touched many of our lives, and the joy of knowing He is with the God whom he so faithfully served.

Nazarene Pastor Killed

Pastor Desmond Rankine, age 50, was killed last night, following his Wednesday night service. Rankine had just completed the service at his church, Erwin Church of the Nazarene in St. James, Jamaica (near Montego Bay). He was walking down the hill from the church with a member of the church and two of his children (ages 8 and 9). A gang appeared and shot him to death.

Brother Rankine leaves behind a wife and five children. At this time there is only speculation for the motivation of this shooting.

Dr. Smee, Caribbean Regional Director, has conveyed to Rev. Lionel Brown, the District Superintendent, and to the family of Pastor Rankine that Nazarenes around the world would be praying for them and the district family during these difficult days. In his grief, Rev. Brown said, "We are all soldiers of the Cross . . . we are always out there in our communities representing Christ . . . the Devil would want to stop our ministry . . . things like this happen. When they do, we cry, pray, hurt, and then hold up our heads and keep pressing on and marching forward."

Join with us as we mourn the senseless loss of a father, pastor, and strong, Christian leader, Desmond Rankine. Pray for the family and their support structure. Pray with us for the emotional healing of this family. Pray for those that committed this crime that they will come to know God and forgiveness and love.

If you would like to send condolences to the family you may direct them through the District Superintendent at: Rev. Lionel Brown

Your Help and Prayers Are Needed

Rev. Daniel Small, District Superintendent of The Bahamas, was shocked at the destruction. Rev. Small was only recently able to travel from Nassau and the district office to the Grand Bahama island, with its main city of Freeport, to view the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma.  Wilma, a fast moving storm, sped over the Florida peninsula from West to East, doing more damage than anticipated.

The Grand Bahama is the closest island to the United States and is located just off the Atlantic coast - east of Fort Lauderdale. We have four Nazarene churches on this Bahama island. All were affected.

The entire Grand Bahama island has been almost without telephone communications and power since the storm passed over several weeks ago, even between the other Bahamian islands. The Nazarene District in the Bahamas immediately began to assist with essential supplies and services.  The home of Simeon Outten, son of a Nazarene pastor, had its foundation wash away with the storm surge (20 ft).  Going back, they could not find where the house should be. It and the belongings are 100 % destroy or washed away.  Small reports that witnesses claim the storm surge went over the top of Grace Church of the Nazarene. (see pictures)

The community mourns the loss of one child who was washed out to sea in the surge.

Here are four pictures that you can see from the Grace Church of the Nazarene in Freeport, Bahamas.

1. Exterior of Grace Church of the Nazarene.
2. Church Van
3. Interior of church.
4. Roof damage to multi-purpose building.

You can contribute financially (on-line or check) to the relief and reconstruction at Caribbean Hurricane Relief.  This is through the ministry of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries.

Please pray for our Nazarenes. Please feel free to send your words of encouragement. Write to Rev. Small, D.S. of the Bahamas

Pass this along to friends and family and your local prayer lines.

Relative of Nazarene Worships with Larger Family

Recently a cousin of Rev. Raymond Moore's* wife, a Peace Corps volunteer, Megan Hawks, joined a Nazarene church in St. Kitts for Sunday morning worship.  Ms. Hawk is not a member of the Nazarene denomination but is a member of the larger Christian family. Read what she had to say about the worship service with her brothers and sisters in the Nazarene church in St. Kitts.

This weekend I was blessed and so fortunate to find the only Nazarene church on the island.  I worshiped with 11 other people in the morning and then went back for more in the evening with a smaller crowd. They loved hearing that my cousin Raymond is a Nazarene pastor . . . I couldn't believe their energy and passion. These 11 people sounded like 100 people when they sang and worshiped with no music but an occasional tambourine and clapping of hands and feet.

Sunday morning worship is truly a thing to behold in the Caribbean.  Those traveling to the Caribbean are always welcome to join with their family to worship God.  Be ready, though. They will expect you to give good news of what God is doing in your part of the world!

Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. 17 He has brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and to us Jews who were near. 18 Now all of us, both Jews and Gentiles, may come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. 19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family.Ephesians 2:16-19

Raymond Moore is the Administrative Director of Nazarene Financial Services and serves alongside of Dr. Marilyn McCool, General Treasurer / Headquarters Financial Office. He provides administrative oversight to the offices under Dr. McCool's scope of responsibility which include P&B USA, P&B International, Stewardship Ministries, USA Church Loan Fund, Global Treasury Services, and Buildings and Facilities Services.

From Dennis to Wilma, Cuba Still in Destructive Path

July 8, 2005, Hurricane Dennis hit Cuba hard. We have had many hurricanes since and several that have hit the U.S. However, we ask that you remember Cuba as delays in communications have led to the report of Nazarenes affected by Hurricane Dennis to be accessible only now.

We praise God that the Cuban Church of the Nazarene ministered to those in need. They report that of the 12 non-Christian homes they ministered to in the area around Niquero four of those homes have accepted Christ as a direct result of the compassionate ministries after Hurricane Dennis.

Below are some of people and places affected by Dennis. May they serve as a guide to prayer. Even now, months after the fact, join with us to lift up our brothers and sisters who are not yet recovered from the natural disaster in their back yard.

Virgen Zayas had her house completely destroyed by the storm. Hurricane Dennis reached category 4 with winds of 150 mph. These strong winds carried Mrs. Zayas’ son more than 100 meters away from their home. He suffered cuts on his face and body.

Another family, a father, mother, and 14 year old son, from the same area also had their home destroyed and rode out the storm in a tree.

Three Nazarene churches suffered damage and 65 homes of Nazarenes were damaged and destroyed. This includes two parsonages.

  • Pray that the clean-up and recovery continue.
  • Pray that our Nazarenes will be the shining light of Christ to those outside the family.
  • Pray that Hurricane Wilma does not prove to be a serious storm for Cuba.
